CDS or Combined Defence
Services is an exam which the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) conducts
with the purpose to make recruitments for the defence services that means the
office cadre of the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force. The exam is commenced two
times every year which is categorized as (I) and (II). Candidates who qualify
the written round are then interviewed by the Service Selection Board (SSB) and
after selection on the basis of their merit and the choice as given by the
candidate, he is sent to one of the following institutes for orientation
training:

Indian Military Academy, Dehradun

Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala
-
Officer’s Training Academy, Chennai
-
Air Force Academy, Hyderabad
Woman candidates are only eligible for Officer’s
Training Academy, Chennai.
The eligibility for the CDS exam includes:

Proper citizenship of the candidate ( The candidate can be a citizen of
India, Bhutan, Nepal or a Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1st
January, 2962)
Educational qualification:
§
The candidate applying
for the posts like OTA and IMA applicant must have a degree from a recognized
university or correspondent
§
For candidates
applying for Indian Naval Academy posts, they should hold a degree of an engineering
programme from a recognized university
§
When applying for
the posts, degree from a recognized university with Physics and Math at 12th
Level is compulsory.
Application
Fee:
§
Candidates
applicable for applying in the examination need to pay Rs 200/ (OBC category
and General)
§
Fee charges are not
applicable for SC/ST and any of the Female candidates
§
There is no fee for
SC/ST and Female candidates.
Physical state: Physical fitness is
highly important and candidate should be strong enough to apply for the CDS
Examination 1
Exam Pattern for CDS Exam 2019-20:
Exam
pattern is categorized as the following:
§
There will be an Elementary
Mathematics exam for 2 hours having a weightage of 100 marks.
§
General Knowledge
will take place for the duration of 2 hours. It will also be for 100 marks
§
Elementary

In total,
time duration will be 2 hours and total marks counted will be 300
Exam Duration for OTA:
§
2 hours for General
knowledge which will hole 100 marks
§
2 hours for
subjects like English which will also hold 100 marks.
§
In total, time
duration will be 2 hours and total marks counted will be 200.
§
After the first phase of the CDS exam, the next phases
are as follows:- Interview/
Personality Test: The
candidates who clear the written test are called for the interview. The SSB
procedure has two stages- Stage 1 & Stage 2.
Stage 1 is
basically the Officer’s Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests or the Picture
Perception Description Test(P&DT).
Stage 2 comprises
of the Interview, Group Testing Officer Tasks, Psychology Tests and the
conference. All these tests are conducted over 4 days. The personality of the
candidate is assessed by three different assessors (Interviewing Officer, Group
Testing Officer and the Psychologist)
Document Verification: Once the candidate qualifies the Interview and Personality Test the Document Verification of the candidate takes place.
Medical Examination: The candidate recommended by the SSB undergoes a medical examination
by the board of Service Medical Officers. Women candidates will undergo Medical
Examination by a Medical Board comprising male/ female doctors/ specialists/
Gynaecologist. There will be a Lady Medical Officer as member of Board. Only
those candidates will be admitted to the Academy who are declared fit by the
Medical Board.
